How it all started...
First Baptist Church of Chillicothe has a rich and meaningful story—one marked by perseverance, faith, and a deep commitment to the gospel. While some of the earliest records have been lost to time, what’s clear is this: from the very beginning, God was at work bringing people together to form a church in this community.
Baptist ministry in the Chillicothe area dates back to the earliest days of Livingston County in the late 1830s. As families settled in the area and travelers passed through heading west, a group of believers began gathering for worship, laying the foundation for what would become First Baptist Church.
By the mid-1840s, an organized Baptist congregation was meeting in Chillicothe—first in shared spaces like the county courthouse, and eventually in dedicated buildings. As the town grew, so did the church, becoming a steady gospel presence in a developing community.

Faith through challenges...
Like much of the nation, the church faced deep division during the Civil War. The conflict didn’t just affect the country—it reached into the pews, separating members into different congregations based on their loyalties.
But that’s not where the story ends.
In a powerful display of grace and unity, members from both groups came back together just a few years later. In 1869, the two congregations reunited as one church again. What followed was a season of renewal and growth, including many baptisms and a strengthened sense of mission.

Growing with the Community...
As Chillicothe continued to grow (especially with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s) the church grew alongside it.
Over the years, First Baptist Church has worshiped in multiple locations, each one representing a new chapter of ministry and outreach.
Through every move, every challenge, and every season, one thing has remained the same: a desire to glorify God and share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Still the Story Today...
Today, First Baptist Church continues that same mission. We are a church rooted in God’s Word, centered on the gospel, and committed to reaching people with the hope of Christ.
Our desire is to know HIM, serve HIM, and make HIM known .
Our story isn’t just something from the past; it’s still being written today.
And we’d love for you to be a part of it.
